Update from Dr. Avni Shah

Dr. Shah received a Fellow Travel Grant in 2018 and used the funds to perform outreach missions in Tanzania and Sierra Leone.

 Glaucoma clinical and surgical skills transfer

  • Supervised clinical evaluation of ~40 glaucoma patients
  • Reinforcement of key elements to examination of patients with diagnosed or suspected glaucoma and applying standard methodology in approach to initial and subsequent encounters
  • IOP, gonioscopy, disc exam, visual field testing, setting IOP goals and stepwise approach to management
  • EMR template created for glaucoma patients

 

iCare tonometry taught to registrars, gonioscopy review with assistant medical officer-ophthalmologists

(AMOs) from Mvumi, visual field interpretation reviewed with Dr. Sandi and AMOs

  • Surgical teaching of Ahmed valve procedure to Dr. Sandi (4 surgeries completed as primary surgeon)
  • Surgical teaching of intraoperative gonioscopy and Kahook Dual Blade goniotomy procedure to Dr. Sandi (~10 surgeries completed as primary surgeon)
  • 1 hour interactive Grand Rounds presentation given jointly by Dr. Sandi, Dr. Shah, and Dr. Sophia (registrar) to audience of ~200 medical students and faculty on the topic of glaucoma

2-week intensive glaucoma clinical and surgical teaching (Kahook Dual Blade, Ahmed Glaucoma Valve, trabeculotomy)

Supervised clinical evaluation of >150 glaucoma patients

Surgical teaching of Ahmed Glaucoma Valve (~3 primary); Kahook Dual Blade (~3 primary); trabeculotomy (~2 primary) and supervision of trabeculectomy (~5 primary)

Dr. Mustapha continues to perform these procedures frequently and is one of the only surgeons in the region performing glaucoma surgery. She recently was awarded a scholarship to attend AAO in 2019 through the Rotary Host program. She is also the recipient of an ICO fellowship in glaucoma which she will complete at the University of Colorado.
